Provider Trainings HIFY's provider trainings are open to youth workers, health care workers, counselors, parents, and all people who strive to create a healthy environment for youth. During our interactive trainings, participants gain practical skills in working with youth, explore trends in adolescent health and share their experiences serving youth from many communities. 2008 Training Dates: Spring 2008 Health & Youth Development Fall 2008 Health & Youth Development Latin@s & Health and Youth Development Interested in having us come to your agency?
NEW!!! Latinas/os are the fastest growing racial/ethnic group in the United States, and make up approximately one quarter to one fifth of the Bay Area. While Latina/o youth face often-cited challenges such as poverty, lack of access to services and education, and discrimination augmented by recent anti-immigrant campaigns, their strengths are often ignored. This workshop introduces aspects of Latin American and Latina/o cultures that promote resilience, health, and can empower Latina/o youth to thrive in their adulthood. Latinas/os, Health, and Youth Development is specifically designed for adults that work with Latina/o youth and are seeking to challenge traditional deficit-based approaches by practicing culturally appropriate youth development.
This training introduces HIFY's perspective on youth and health. We explore youth development theory, the values underlying our work with youth, and how to apply an asset-based approach to youth health issues. Includes strategies for applying youth development in both health care settings and youth agencies, as well as a chance to hear and share best practices.
"Sex is dirty and nasty. Save it for the one you love." Ridiculous as it may sound, this is the message that young people often receive. HIFY's training challenges this message by examining the concept of positive sexuality and explaining how it applies to working with young people. We discuss how to support young people as they make sexual decisions, and develop healthy intimate relationships. Includes basic overview of sexual health, STDs, and HIV prevention, as well as gender roles and relationships.
It's not just about rainbow flags and HIV. Homophobia affects the well-being of all young people, whether they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, questioning (LGBTQIQ) or straight. Our interactive training gives you the knowledge and skills to create a safe place for all young people to explore their sexuality and gender regardless of how they identify. We also discuss specific health concerns and work on ways to develop our own ability to be allies. Includes basic information on adolescent identity development and transgender youth.
The training is an overview of youth substance use and harm reduction. We will discuss harm reduction theory, analyze messages that youth receive about drugs, and explore the context in which youth make decisions about substance use. Includes activities to practice working with youth to reduce harm and promote health.
