Things to Learn at New York Fashion Week
Fur, Fur, Fur
During the Fashion Week in New York many designers made emphasis on fur elements in their collections. For example, J. Mendel Europe s show featured long and short fur jackets made from silver fox, mink, sable in a variety of colors and patterns. All models looked really gorgeous.
Where did this new trend of wearing fur start from? This material was widely used by Marc Jacobs an in Kanye West fashion and music show Yeezy Season 3. Such fashion designers as Carolina Herrera, Michael Kors, Prabal Gurung, and Vera Wang also incorporated fur elements in their looks.
And not only the designers demonstrated their passion for fur. Guests of NYFW were also seen wearing rabbit, fox, and mink, and the fashion shows were not accompanied by PETA outraged demonstrations and there were no signs of thrown ketchup.
Some designers preferred fake fur though. Calvin Klein Collection featured fake fur and lots of leather.
This season such progressive designers like Gypsy Sport and Hood by Air continued to push gender boundaries. Hood by Air's "Pilgrimage" collection was distinguished by barcoded airline baggage tags attached to different clothing, subtly implying refugee crisis in Europe. Also there were anoraks shaped like chadors and Saran Wrap bustiers that slightly resembled luggage wrapped in plastic at the airport.
The women's collection from Uribe featured male and female models dressed in ruffle crop tops, lace separates, denim skirts and fleece patchwork coats, similar to street style of the '70s and '90s. Very often it was quite difficult to say whether the model walking down catwalk was a man or a woman.
Designer Kirby Jean-Raymond partnered with Erykah Badu to create the collection, which focused on America's mental health crisis while Zac Posen emphasized diversity in fashion his collection inspired by Princess Elizabeth of Toro, the renowned Ugandan lawyer.
Lady Gaga's Fashion Romp
Lady Gaga surprised everyone with amazing transformations that occurred during a rather short period of time. At first, with the help of her fashion adviser Maxwell, she changed her appearance for a David Bowie tribute performance during the Grammy Awards. She had a Ziggy Stardust-era look and bright orange hair. Less than 24 hours later, Gaga returned to the East Coast to congratulate Maxwell with his latest collection and was seen in the front row, still with her flaming orange hair. But the next day, when she attended Marc Jacobs's gothic show featuring his new collection she appeared with blond hair again dressed in oversized black coat with plush fur sleeves and lace-up black boots.
The whole family of reality TV were sighted together at Kanye West's "Yeezy Season 3" show that took place during the Fashion Week. They were all dressed in white and were accompanied by Kris Jenner and her ex-husband, Caitlyn Jenner. Anna Wintour was spotted sitting with Kim Kardashian during the show. During the Fashion Week Kendall Jenner walked as a model in various shows, including Marc Jacobs's and Michael Kors's, while younger sister Kylie was sitting front row watching the shows.
Made for History
Anna Wintour attended Marc Jacobs's show wearing a custom T-shirt, sequined version of Marc Jacobs's new "Made for History" Hillary Clinton graphic one, with the face of the Democratic presidential candidate portrayed in shades of red, white, and blue. Jacobs himself appeared at the end of his show in a glittering take on his own design, launched earlier on Clinton's campaign site.
The Shows are Changing
Of course, Fashion Week has changed a lot and today some designers would rather not to show clothes on the runway, but sell it directly to consumers right away. Still there are designers who follow the traditions, and the important part of the Fashion Week is not the show, but how it is watched.
This week, the rich and famous could be seen sitting in the traditional rows at the front, taking pictures of the clothes. An alternative to the traditional runway are "presentations" with designers showing their clothes in rooms, where attendees could walk around looking at the models. Rachel Zoe, Alice + Olivia and Thom Browne showed their collections in this format.
Puffer Jackets Versus Fur
Not only fur was all time popular at Fashion Week, both on the runway and in the front row. The puffer jacket was a hit as well. DKNY featured nylon puffer bombers, coats, pants, and even scarves; The Blonds demonstrated sequin puffers; Hood by Air and 3.1 Philip Lim showed sleeping-bag coats. Even Marc Jacobs included a Canada Goose puffer parka in his latest collection.
